This Week at the Studio - Hand-Carved Fern Earrings

This week at the studio has been all about ferns, texture, and experimenting with new ways to bring natural details into clay.

I recently hand-carved a custom fern stamp using traditional printmaking tools, carefully shaping each tiny leaf and curve to capture the delicate structure of real ferns. Once the stamp was finished, I pressed the design into polymer clay to create deeply textured impressions full of intricate detail.

To highlight the texture, I softly brushed the raised areas with shimmering mica powders, allowing the metallic pigments to settle into the design and emphasize every line and contour. The effect catches the light beautifully and gives the earrings an almost fossil-like botanical feel.

After the polymer clay was textured and finished, I used an X-Acto knife to carefully cut around the fern shapes by hand, transforming each impression into individually shaped dangling fern earrings. Because every piece is cut and created individually, each pair has its own slight variations and character.

I love projects like this because they combine several processes: carving, sculpting, texture work, and botanical inspiration (all in one piece). There is something especially satisfying about creating the original stamp by hand first, then using it as a tool to create wearable art.

The finished fern earrings are now available on the shop, and I’m excited to finally share them.
